Final installment: CF card saga

Posted in CF Card Issues, Hardware Adventures at 1:03 pm by sdjf

Tried a few more things on the sage advice of some friends:

bash# /mnt/card/Programs/fdisk /dev/hda1

Unable to read /dev/hda1
bash# /mnt/card/Programs/fdisk /mnt/cf
You will not be able to write the partition table.

Unable to read /mnt/cf
bash#

bash# dd if=/dev/hda count=1 bs=512 | more
1+0 records in
1+0 records out

–snipped binary output that wordpress couldn’t handle–
The human-readable part of the display showed the following:

MSDOS5.0 NO NAME FAT16

Remove disks or other media.
Disk error
Press any key to restart
bash#

Try again: when used ‘cardctl eject’, CF card icon disappeared appropriately but then fdisk couldn’t open it.

bash# umount /mnt/cf
umount: /mnt/cf: Invalid argument
bash# cardctl eject
bash# /mnt/card/Programs/fdisk /dev/hda1

Unable to open /dev/hda1
bash#

And of course mkfs won’t work as it isn’t partitioned!

bash# mkfs.vfat /dev/hda1
mkfs.vfat 2.8 (28 Feb 2001)
mkfs.vfat: Attempting to create a too large file system
bash# mkfs.ext2 /dev/hda1
mke2fs 1.19, 13-Jul-2000 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09
/dev/hda1: Memory allocation failed while setting up superblock
bash# mkfs.minix /dev/hda1
21856 inodes
65535 blocks
Firstdatazone=696 (696)
Zonesize=1024
Maxsize=268966912

mkfs.minix: unable to clear boot sector
bash#

So, no more generics for me. I’m getting a refund.
