The Space Monger

Posted in Linux/Zaurus Tips and Tricks at 7:12 am by sdjf

Found it! I hadn’t looked at /etc/ppp/connect-errors in a very long time and it had grown to ~780k! No wonder my space was so extremely low….trimmed it down to under 3k. No wonder I was getting “No space left on device” so often.

hehehehe. At last! Still low, less than a meg free, but 850k free is a WHOLE lot better than 100-200k. 🙂 Progress!

There are a lot of other system files that grow and can take up space, and I’ve started working on a post about locating them, but wanted to share today’s find.

Other good places to clean out files generally are in /tmp/ and in /var/log

Sending denied

Posted in Online Tips, Tricks and Tools, Webmail Issues, Zaurus Trials and Tribulations at 5:51 am by sdjf

It look like at least 10 people found my blog yesterday, and at least 3 people so far today, when they entered “5.7.0 mail sending denied” or various versions of that, into a search.

So, if that’s how you got here, know that you are not alone. When it happened to me about 11 days ago (see this post), it was a gmail thing, and cleared up of it’s own accord in several hours.

It does look like it created some problems for me with bouncing mail. Read the rest of this entry »

Struggling with email at yahoo and gmail

Posted in Online Tips, Tricks and Tools, Webmail Issues, Zaurus Trials and Tribulations at 2:45 pm by sdjf

Even if you have your email client(s) or browser bookmarks for webmail all set up and working perfectly, the big guys seem to love messing up our complacency by upgrading.

Yesterday’s aggravation was my inability to get gmail to send email from my primary address via SMTP mail. The error message I got from tkcMail was:

Error while waiting for confirmation we can send the message data.

Free Guides for Linux Beginners

Posted in Linux/Zaurus Tips and Tricks at 1:00 am by sdjf

I took a look at the Introduction to Linux from TLDP. The strengths of this book make it worth looking at if you are familiar with DOS, if you like using Konqueror, or if you would appreciate some well-written exercises that will guide you through the learning experience.

Did I really say Konqueror? Yes, in Section 2.3. “Getting help”, the author gives instructions for how to use Konqueror to enter some commands, if you prefer to use it for browsing for help. My hunch is that the the instructions given may also be helpful for someone using similar alternate browsers, such as Midnite Commander.

Linux How-to-Guides

Posted in Linux/Zaurus Tips and Tricks at 2:33 am by sdjf

I am always interested in finding more down-to-earth information about using Linux, and I found links to quite a few more online, Web-based tutorials that look promising, at http://www.tldp.org/guides.html.

These are references I am considering adding to my Linux newbie page. I already have listed a number of very helpful tutorials and resources there, but I don’t know when I’ll get around to checking these new ones out. So, I thought I’d share my new list here.
